Media Policy

The University of Maryland aims to service media requests with accurate and timely information while also telling the story of the university and its leadership, faculty, students and alumni.

Media that are visiting UMD's campus are asked to notify University Communications in advance by emailing, dialing 301-257-0073 or by communicating directly with any member of the University Communications staff. Exceptions include members of the media covering athletics. Those individuals should coordinate directly with the UMD Athletics Communications Office.

Media Advisories

A media advisory is an announcement to members of the media about an event, such as a press conference, forum or speaker series. It is presented in an easy-to-read format and contains specific details, such as date, time, location and important participants. A media advisory provides an overview of the event and makes it easy for reporters to quickly identify and share details.

Press Releases

A press release is a way to share news with reporters and bloggers, such as research findings, new initiatives, awards and accomplishments.

When writing a press release, remember to:

• include the most newsworthy information in the first paragraph
• create a compelling headline
• keep the writing style clear and concise. The writing should be easy to understand, using accessible language and avoiding jargon.

Boilerplate Copy

A boilerplate is a standard 'about us' paragraph that briefly describes an organization or group. It typically includes general information about your school, center or initiative, services offered, awards and recognitions, etc., and is located at the end of a press release.
