Visual Identity
Logos
The University of Maryland logo system is the core element of our institution's visual identity. Presenting a unified visual identity is an essential part of building and maintaining our reputation of prestige, excellence and authority as the state of Maryland’s flagship institution. Use of UMD’s logos indicates agreement to abide by the university standards detailed within our brand guidelines.
Primary Logo
The University of Maryland globe logo is the primary identifier for the university. Used consistently across the majority of communications, it provides immediate brand recognition.
The horizontal configuration (above) is the primary and preferred configuration and should be used whenever possible. Reserve the vertical configuration (below) for applications with limited horizontal space or where a taller layout is better suited.
No alterations are permitted. The globe cannot be used on its own as a standalone graphic element.
Other Brand Marks
Wordmark
The wordmark may be used in approved applications where a simplified brand expression is more appropriate than the full university logo. Common examples include:
- Merchandise and apparel where the globe competes with the overall design
- Promotional items with unusual shapes or production limitations
- Specialty production methods, such as foil stamping, embossing, debossing,
engraving, embroidery or other finishes where reproducing the globe's finer details isn't practical
Seals
The informal seal may be used by all units for ceremonial applications such as invitations, awards and other instances conveying officiality.
The formal seal is reserved for official university business, presidential communications, diplomas and certificate applications.
Unit Logo Lockups
All UMD colleges, schools, departments, centers and institutes, and non-curricular units must use the approved logo lockup on all communication materials.
Athletics
The University of Maryland athletic trademarks are reserved for use by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Co-branding
University marks may not be used in conjunction with the name or marks of any other entity without prior written permission from the Office of Marketing and Communications and that entity. If corporate entity logos are locked up with a university mark on merchandise or promotional giveaways, the item is royalty-bearing.
If two or more campus units are coordinating an event, program or other joint effort, each unit’s lockup must appear separately and neither may dominate the other. This protects the integrity of both logos. Units should not attempt to modify existing logos or create their own. Please submit a request through the Office of Marketing and Communications for a co-branded logo.
Usage Guidelines
For consistent use of the university’s visual identity, refer to the logo usage guidelines before designing print, digital, apparel or promotional materials.
